Roomba error 14 (or 1-4): "Reinstall the bin" — seat the filter and bin, clean the contacts, then reboot

Roomba Model: i Series, j Series, s Series, e Series, Combo 10 Max, 600–900 Series (shown as 1-4 on some) · Error: 14 · Updated

Your Roomba says "Reinstall the bin, then press CLEAN" even though the bin is in. Check that the filter is seated, click the bin in fully, clean the bin contacts and reboot; only if it persists is a replacement bin the likely fix.

What you see: the robot stops or refuses to start and says "Error fourteen (14). Reinstall Roomba's bin, then press CLEAN to restart" (900 series), "Reinstall the bin, then press Clean" (i Series), or "Error one four (1-4)" (600, 700 and 800 series). On Roomba Essentials the app may say "bin missing". On 700–900 series the troubleshooting and full-bin lights may also come on.

What it means: iRobot says the robot is not detecting an installed bin. On the i Series error chart, iRobot lists the likely cause as "Bin not present in robot. Ensure filter is installed in bin. Check bin detect switch." On i and j Series robots, the filter matters as much as the bin.

Cost of this fix: €0 for steps 1–5. Step 6 is a replacement bin, which iRobot says normally ships with a new filter.

Step 1 — Check the filter (1 min)

  1. Press the bin release and slide the bin out.
  2. Look inside the bin: is a filter installed, and is it fully in? iRobot's error 14 articles for the i Series, j Series, Combo 10 Max and the newer 100–800 Series all say to check this first.
  3. On i Series robots, the i7 manual says to reinsert the filter with the ridged grips facing out, and warns that the robot will not run if the filter is not installed correctly.
  4. Tap the filter clean over a bin, or fit a fresh one if it is clogged or damaged.

An owner on r/roomba explained it like this: the "reinstall bin" error comes from the bin detect switch, but that switch actually detects whether a filter is installed in the bin. So a missing, loose or wrongly oriented filter can trigger error 14 even when the bin is in.

Step 2 — Click the bin in properly (1 min)

Slide the bin back in until you hear a click — iRobot says you should hear it when the bin is fully inserted. A bin that is only half seated triggers error 14. On models with a bin door, make sure the door is closed. Then press CLEAN.

Step 3 — Clean the bin contacts (5 min)

Dust, hair and dirt on the contacts are a common cause.

Let everything dry before reinserting the bin.

Step 4 — Look for physical damage (2 min)

While the bin is out, look at the contacts and the bin:

Step 5 — Reboot the robot (2 min)

If the error persists after you reinstall the bin, iRobot says to reboot the robot. A reboot does not delete maps or schedules.

Don't factory reset just for this error. A factory reset wipes maps and settings, and iRobot recommends contacting Customer Care first.

Step 6 — Swap the bin (if it still won't clear)

If error 14 persists after a reboot, iRobot's i Series and j Series articles say you may need a replacement bin. If you have a spare bin, or a friend with the same model, test with it first. A known-good bin tells you whether the fault is in the bin or in the robot. In an r/roomba thread titled "Error 14 solved", a 600 series owner reports that cleaning and resetting didn't help, and that a replacement bin from iRobot ended the error.

When buying, match the bin to your exact series (for example i Series and j Series bins differ). If you have a Clean Base, check that the bin is the auto-empty version. iRobot says replacement bins include a new filter. [Affiliate placeholder: Roomba replacement bin / filters — not active]

FAQ

What does Roomba error 14 mean?

iRobot says error 14 (announced as "1-4" on some 600, 700 and 800 series robots) means the robot is not detecting an installed bin. On i Series and j Series robots iRobot also points to the filter: the robot checks that a filter is installed in the bin.

Does a reboot delete my maps or schedules?

No. According to iRobot, a reboot is safe and does not delete maps, schedules or other preferences. A factory reset does — iRobot recommends contacting Customer Care before doing one.

Do I need a new bin?

Only if the error persists after you have checked the filter, seated the bin, cleaned the contacts and rebooted. That is the point at which iRobot says you may need a replacement bin. If you have a second bin, swap it in first to confirm the bin is the problem.
